Interning at MoMA, “an incredible opportunity to enrich my artistic perspective and broaden my horizons”
SNF’s continued support for the Museum over the years has continued this essentially forward-looking mission, helping open up access to MoMA for visitors who are blind or have low vision, are deaf, have intellectual and developmental disabilities, or have dementia.
Beyond the galleries, SNF support has also helped open access to the institution for early-career aspiring arts professionals through an internship program launched in 2013, two alumnae of which went on to found ARTWORKS, an organization providing fellowships and professional development opportunities to artists in Greece.
Hear from Persephone Michou about her experience in the most recent cohort SNF interns at MoMA.
What stands out as a highlight of your time at the museum?
“It’s difficult to pinpoint a single highlight because every day at the museum was unique and enriching. This role provided me with invaluable experiences, opportunities to collaborate with international professionals, and access to MoMA’s remarkable collection of artworks. However, one moment that truly stands out is my research trip to Japan. During this journey, I had the chance to delve deeper into East Asian visual arts by visiting local museums and galleries and engaging with specialized curators. It was an unforgettable experience that broadened my perspective and deepened my appreciation for global art traditions.”
What will you take with you from the experience?
“After a year at MoMA, I carry with me a “luggage” full of cherished memories from my daily life at the museum. Working in the museum's International Program, I had the privilege of collaborating with an exceptional team of experts from across the globe. I am deeply grateful for the respect and support I received from my colleagues, who not only guided my professional growth but also entrusted me with meaningful responsibilities. This experience has left a lasting impression on both my career and personal development.”
What’s something outsiders might be surprised to learn about MoMA?
“One of the most surprising things I learned from my first day as an intern at MoMA is that, despite its reputation as a vast and influential institution, it is ultimately powered by people. Behind the iconic galleries, MoMA’s offices host exceptional teams of experts who work tirelessly to make modern art accessible to everyone. As interns, we were not just observers but active contributors. The program provided meaningful roles and genuine support, empowering us to make a real impact while growing professionally.”
