Empowering the next generation of filmmakers

May 28, 2025
This May, the coastal town of Preveza in Northern Greece transformed into a hub of cinematic creativity and learning.

The Short Encounters International Short Film Festival, held May 22 to 25, this year launched its first masterclass for students. The Introduction to Filmmaking Masterclass was created to provide students with the tools to discover and explore the world of cinema as creators.

Over the course of the three-day bootcamp, participants learned every stage of movie production, from scripting and directing to post-production, film analysis and music composition. With an emphasis on hands-on learning, the class offered them the opportunity to meet internationally acclaimed filmmakers like Jamie O’Rourke and Paz Ramírez, composer Kim Nyberg and Oscar-nominated director Doug Roland through lectures and workshops.

The Short Encounters Festival has established itself as an international fixture, and this year’s masterclass, made possible through a grant made by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF), marks a new chapter in its efforts to spark younger generations’ creativity.
