Celebrating 70 years of artistic creation at the Athens Epidaurus Festival

The SNF grant makes possible four emblematic productions at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus—performances that carry the stamp of renowned Greek and international artists, specially designed for the Festival’s anniversary year.
Sophocles’ Antigone
A co-production with the National Theatre of Greece directed by Ulrich Rasche.
The world premiere of this production, based on a translation by Nikos Panagiotopoulos, opens the program at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus on June 27, with a stellar cast of Greek actors. The performance will be also presented on June 28 and 29.

Utopia
A concert by internationally distinguished Greek musician and conductor Teodor Currentzis, along with his Utopia orchestra, presenting works by Gustav Mahler (Symphony No. 4 & Songs on the Death of Children) on July 19.

Oedipus—The story of a transformation: from darkness to light
An ensemble of distinguished actors under the guidance of Yannis Houvardas perform Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex and Oedipus at Colonus as a unified work. The performance is a co-production of the Athens Epidaurus Festival and the Lykofos Cultural Organization and will be staged on July 25 and 26.

Europa’s Pledge / Le Serment d’Europe
Lebanese-Canadian author, director, actor, and Artistic Director of Théâtre National de la Colline Wajdi Mouawad presents, for the first time ever at Epidaurus, a new work inspired by heroines from ancient Greek drama as part of the Contemporary Ancients Cycle. The performance will be presented on August 1 and 2 by a multinational cast in a multilingual format with Juliette Binoche.

SNF’s support is part of the Foundation’s broader work, both in Greece and internationally, to support organizations and institutions that promote artistic creation while simultaneously increasing access to the arts for all. This year’s collaboration follows previous SNF grants to the Athens Epidaurus Festival for the realization of individual productions in 2007 and 2012 and general support for the Festival’s program in 2014.
