A fellowship on youth mental health for South African podcasters

May 22, 2025
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Global Center for Child and Adolescent Mental Health at the Child Mind Institute is collaborating with Radio Workshop, another SNF grantee-partner, on an effort to boost young South African voices contributing to the public dialogue against mental health stigma and for evidence-based treatment.

Over two years, six SNF Global Center Communicator Fellows will produce podcast episodes that may be heard by Radio Workshop’s millions of listeners. Two pairs of junior fellows will receive mentorship from two senior fellows, one of whom, Mary-Ann Nobele, was a member of the SNF Nostos Youth Advisory Committee in 2022 and 2023.

This is the second round of Communicator Fellowships. For the first, in 2024, the SNF Global Center partnered with the Carter Center, the nonprofit founded by former United States President Jimmy Carter, on a two-year fellowship for Burundian journalist Avit Ndayiziga, who focused on the impacts of climate change on mental health.

Its fellowship program, which is at the heart of how the SNF Global Center seeks to effect international change, has sent Clinic Fellows from Malawi to Brazil and supported Research Fellows in Pakistan and Kenya.
